Shoyoroll Size Guide 2026: How to Find Your Perfect BJJ Gi Fit (A0 to A5 Explained)

This Shoyoroll size guide covers everything you need to find the perfect BJJ gi fit — from A0 to A5, women’s F sizes, kids M sizes, and shrinkage tips. Buying a Shoyoroll gi online is exciting until you realise you have no idea whether to order an A1 or an A2. This guide fixes that in 5 minutes.

Shoyoroll sizing is not like regular clothing. An A2 is not simply “medium.” The H and L suffixes change the cut entirely. And if you get it wrong, you are either swimming in fabric or cutting off circulation to your arms.

This guide breaks down every Shoyoroll size — adult men, women, and kids — so you order right the first time.

“Shoyoroll Size Guide: Why BJJ Sizing is Different”

Standard clothing uses S, M, L, XL based mostly on chest size. Shoyoroll uses a BJJ-specific sizing system built around the demands of grappling — where a gi that is too loose gets grabbed, and one that is too tight tears during guard work.

The core Shoyoroll adult sizes run from A0 to A5. But within that range, Shoyoroll also offers modified cuts:

  • H suffix (e.g. A2H) — same height, wider cut for stockier or heavier builds
  • L suffix (e.g. A2L) — longer jacket and pants for taller, leaner grapplers
  • F suffix (e.g. A1F) — women’s cut, shorter torso, tapered waist

Understanding these suffixes is the key to getting the right fit.

The Most Common Sizing Questions Answered

A1 vs A2 — Which Should I Choose?

This is the most asked sizing question for Shoyoroll. Here is the simple answer:

  • If you are between 5’7″ and 5’10” and weigh under 80 kg — try A1 first
  • If you are between 5’7″ and 5’10” and weigh 80–90 kg — go A2
  • If you have broad shoulders or a thick chest — size up regardless of weight

The A2 is the most common size globally. When in doubt between A1 and A2, consider your build more than your height. A stocky 5’8″ grappler will fill an A2 much better than an A1.

What Does the H Mean in Shoyoroll Sizes?

H stands for Heavy — it means the same jacket length as the base size but with extra room in the shoulders, chest, and waist. If you find standard cuts tight across your upper body, the H variant is your answer.

For example: A grappler who is 5’9″ and 88 kg would normally fall in the A2 range. But if they have broad shoulders and a wide chest, the A2H fits far better than a standard A2.

What Does the L Mean in Shoyoroll Sizes?

L stands for Long — the jacket and pants are cut longer to accommodate taller, leaner athletes. If you are 6’0″+ but relatively lean, a standard A3 may be too wide in the body while an A2L gives you the length without the extra bulk.

Shoyoroll Women’s Size Chart (F Sizes)

Women’s Shoyoroll gis use an F suffix and are cut differently from men’s sizes — shorter torso, tapered waist, and narrower shoulders. Do not size up into men’s cuts thinking they will fit. The proportions are completely wrong for women’s builds.

SizeHeightWeightClothing size (approx)
A00F4’11″–5’2″ (150–158cm)45–55 kg / 99–121 lbXS (UK 6–8 / US 2–4)
A0F5’1″–5’4″ (155–163cm)50–60 kg / 110–132 lbS (UK 8–10 / US 4–6)
A1F5’3″–5’6″ (160–168cm)58–70 kg / 128–154 lbM (UK 10–12 / US 6–8)
A2F5’5″–5’8″ (165–173cm)68–82 kg / 150–181 lbL–XL (UK 12–16 / US 8–12)
A1H5’3″–5’6″ (160–168cm)75–90 kg / 165–198 lbXL–2XL, stocky build

Sizing tip for women: Size by your hips, not your waist. The hip measurement is the tightest point on a women’s gi jacket. If you are between sizes, go up — you can always tie the jacket tighter, but you cannot make it wider. “This Shoyoroll size guide recommends women always use F sizing.”

Shoyoroll Kids Size Chart (M Sizes)

Kids Shoyoroll gis use M sizing. Use height and weight as your primary guide — age is only approximate.

SizeAge (approx)HeightWeight
M003–4 years95–105cm / 3’1″–3’5″14–17 kg / 31–37 lb
M05–6 years105–115cm / 3’5″–3’9″17–22 kg / 37–48 lb
M17–8 years115–125cm / 3’9″–4’1″22–28 kg / 48–62 lb
M29–11 years125–140cm / 4’1″–4’7″28–38 kg / 62–84 lb
M312–14 years140–155cm / 4’7″–5’1″38–50 kg / 84–110 lb

Kids sizing tip: If your child is between two sizes, always go up. Kids grow fast, and a slightly larger gi is better than one they outgrow in a month. Many parents size up by one when buying — the extra fabric can be rolled at the cuffs temporarily.

Does Shoyoroll Shrink After Washing?

Yes — but not by much if you wash correctly. Shoyoroll gis are made from 450 GSM pearl weave cotton which shrinks slightly on the first wash.

Expected shrinkage:

  • Cold wash (30°C / 86°F): 1–2% shrinkage
  • Warm wash (40°C / 104°F): 2–4% shrinkage
  • Hot wash (60°C+): 5%+ shrinkage — avoid this

Our washing recommendations:

  1. Wash in cold water on a gentle cycle
  2. Air dry flat — do not tumble dry
  3. Do not use bleach or fabric softener
  4. Wash before your first roll to pre-shrink the gi slightly

If you are between sizes and plan to wash in warm water, go up a size. If you wash only in cold water, stay true to size.

Shoyoroll Slim Fit vs Standard Fit

Shoyoroll is known for its athletic, competition cut — tighter and more tapered than many other BJJ brands. This is intentional. A tighter fit means less fabric for opponents to grip.

If you train casually or prefer a more relaxed fit, size up one from your usual. If you compete and want the tightest IBJJF-legal fit, stay true to size or even size down if you are on the border.

IBJJF compliance: All Shoyoroll gis are designed to meet IBJJF sleeve and pant length requirements when worn in the correct size. Sizing up significantly may push you outside IBJJF limits. “Bookmark this Shoyoroll size guide for your next gi purchase.”

How to Measure Yourself for a Shoyoroll Gi

If you are still unsure after reading the charts, measure yourself:

You need:

  • A tape measure
  • Someone to help (or a mirror)

Measurements to take:

  1. Height — stand barefoot against a wall
  2. Weight — use scales, not a guess
  3. Chest — measure around the fullest part of your chest, arms relaxed at sides
  4. Waist — measure at your natural waistline
  5. Arm length — from shoulder tip to wrist bone

Once you have these, match against the size chart above. If your chest and arm measurements suggest different sizes, go by chest for the jacket and arm length for sleeve comfort.
